Crow, Power Animal, Symbol of Sacred Law, Change

By Ina Woolcott

Many cultures consider crows to be the keepers of the Sacred Law, for nothing escapes their keen sight. To have a Crow as a power animal is extremely powerful stuff. When we meditate on the crow and align with it, we are instilled with the wisdom to know ourselves beyond the limitations of one-dimensional thinking and laws. We are taught to appreciate the many dimensions of both reality and ourselves, and to learn to trust our intuition and personal integrity.

Crows often appear in groups, and though there seems to be no variation in their caw-ing to each other, each caw actually has a different meaning. Their complex vocabulary is one sign of their intelligence, and is also a sign of their significance as power animals. When a crow explores something new, others watch closely to see what happens and then learn from it. They often make great noise when hunters are around, warning deer and other birds. Crows recognise potential danger and hence always post lookouts when feeding. This is their most vulnerable time. This helps us understand that we must watch what we believe, to test our habitual ideas about reality against a more universal standard.

Without paying careful attention, we are unable to understand the language of crows, this signifies the fact that we can't always see beyond our own cultural limitations. These limitations include certain moral codes of right and wrong, along with 'rules' that accompany these codes.

Throughout history there have been many (unnecessary) conflicts and wars between humans due to differing moral and religious beliefs. To truly create a new age of love, peace and harmony it is of high importance for us to be able to transcend our particular cultural limitations and to hold in our hearts and souls what we share as spiritual beings in human form. We are all connected, infinitely and composed of the same 'stuff'. We need to realise that hurting others only hurts ourselves. Crow is the bird which represents this transcendence.

Crow can also teach us to be mindful about judging people automatically. Be mindful of your opinions and actions. You need to walk your talk, to speak your truth and to know your life's mission. Again, trust your intuition and personal integrity, to create your own standards, whether or not they match those of the world around you. Be an individual, think for yourself, don't necessarily follow the crowd!

In the courting process the male crow's voice takes on a singing quality. This lets us see what the basis of sacred law is, unconditional love, the one unfailing principle by which we can test our own principles.

Crow is an omen of change. Crows live in the void and have no sense of time, therefore being able to see past, present and future simultaneously. They unite both the light and the dark, both the inner and the outer. Crow is the totem of the Great Spirit and must be held with utmost respected. They are representations of creation and spiritual strength.

Crows are messengers, telling us about the creation and magic all around us, that is available to us just for the asking. Look for opportunities to bring into being the magic of life. The striking black colour of the crow represents the colour of creation. It is the womb out of which the new comes into existence. Black is the colour of the night, giving birth to the light of a new day.

Crows are sly and can be deceptive in their actions. They have been known to build false nests high in treetops to confuse predators. Their nests are built very high up, giving them the chance to watch everything that is going on around them.

As crows are adaptable to all environments and will eat almost anything, they can survive in almost any situation. Crow is surrounded by magic, unseen forces and spiritual strength. If crow enters your life, get out of your familiar nest, look beyond your present range of vision, listen to the message(s) in its caw and act accordingly.

Birth Totem - Crow - September 23rd - October 22nd

Birth Totem Crow is an individual whose outer personality is driven by the quest to bond with another. By design, the crow is a highly curious creature, imbued with a remarkable degree of intelligence. Despite such intelligence, this heightened curiosity will often lead Crow in the path of unforeseen danger. As he follows the glimmering call of a shiny penny, he is oblivious to the encroaching threat of an oncoming vehicle, so intent is he upon retrieving the fascinating object. Birth totem crow individuals can become so focused upon the goal of attaining partnership, that other areas of their daily life may tend to be ignored, eventually leading to some crisis of faith, health or practical consideration that will realign them, at least temporarily, to the bills needing to be paid or the vehicle in need of repair.

In Nature, the crow is part of a community of other crows, and thus, they are very social, preferring the company of their fellow winged ones (and even the company of two-leggeds), to being alone. Like their animal brothers and sisters, birth totem crow will seek companionship and interactions with others almost compulsively. The underlying force that drives one who is operating from the personality center of this birth totem, is a fear of being alone and faced with their own company. Because so much of the focus and attention for one with this birth totem is exerted upon relating to, and pleasing "others" they have learned very little about themselves and thus, have not developed the relationship with the inner self that is requisite for a soul to fully integrate as it moves along the sacred hoop of physical life.

Once crow individual takes the time to go within and learn about themselves, their role along the Red Road, and the lessons they have chosen to come and learn, they will then discover all of the shiny and fascinating aspects of themselves that they have been blessed with. This may then take them on a journey toward a deep and abiding relationship to the self, consequently adding even more to their relationships with others. Thus, the attainment of the higher intent for this birth totem may be had - to know true balance and harmony.

Birth Totem Crow

September 22 - October 22

Keeper of the Sacred Law

Crow knows the Unknowable Mysteries of Creation and is Keeper of All Sacred Law. This Totem signifies first-hand knowledge of a higher order of right and wrong than that indicated by Human Law. Crow see the physical and spiritual world, ( as humanity interprets them ) are an illusion and can simultaneously see the past, present, and future. Crow merges the light and darkness, seeing both inner and outer reality. ~ excerpts from the "Medicine Cards" by Jamie Sams

Crows are Protectors of Ancient Records and Knower of the Unknowable Mysteries of Creation. They are symbols of creation and spiritual strength. To have a Crow Totem is very powerful. It is the Totem of the Great Spirit and as such, must be respected.

Crow is self-empowered because he knows who he is. Honor spiritual truth and you will know true power as well. Crow is a shape-shifter who can teach us that we can be anything we desire.

Personal integrity are your watch-words and your guide in life. Crow medicine is honoring the self, your boundaries and limitations. If you have a Crow Totem, your prime path is to be mindful of your opinions and actions.

The appearance of Crow is always a message from our unconscious, for so often Crow warns us of danger, reminds us of our disappointments, and reveals the darker aspects of our character. The key is to be willing to tell the truth regardless of the consequences.

Crow's gifts are his voice and his keen eyesight. Crow is a wonderful teacher, so be a good student ~ one who is prepared to see from afar and speak with great clarity. With Crow Totem, you speak in a powerful voice when addressing issues that, for you, seem out of harmony, out of balance, or unjust.

Crow lives in the void and has no sense of time; therefore, it sees past, present and future simultaneously. Crow merges both light and dark, both inner and outer.

The striking black color of Crow represents the color of creation. It is the womb out of which new is born. Black, the color of night, gives birth to the light of a new day. Crow is a daytime bird reminding us that magic and creation are present in both. Their ability to shift between the known and unknown worlds indicates new journeys.

Crow is also the guardian of ceremonial magic, calling to us about the creation and magic that is alive in the world today and available to us. Look for opportunities to create and manifest the magic of life.

Crow Totem people are masters of illusion. Do not try to figure Crow out. It is the power of the unknown at work, and something special is about to happen!

In any healing circle, Crow is present. Crow guides the magic of healing and the change in consciousness that will bring about a new reality and dispel disease or illness. You can rest assure whenever Crows are around, magic is nearby and you are about to experience a change in consciousness. Crow can give you the courage to enter the darkness of the void, which is the home of all that is not yet in form.

Crow is an omen of change. When you meet Crow, he could be telling you that there will be changes in your life and that possibly you should step back from the usual way you view reality and look into the inner realms. Be prepared to let go of your old thinking and embrace a new way of viewing yourself and the world.

The Crow signals that you have transcended mortal law, and to permit your own higher self to become your leader.

When you learn to allow your personal integrity to be your guide, your sense of feeling alone will vanish. Your personal will can then emerge so that you will stand in your truth. Be willing to walk your talk, speak your truth, and know your life’s mission, and balance past, present, and future in the now. Shape-shift that old reality and become your future self. Allow the bending of physical laws to aid in creating the shape-shifted world of peace.

Like Crow, we need to see the connection between past, present, and future. Crow’s message is clear ~ what you think today creates your future. Honor the present in love, forgiveness and gratitude. You can change your past, your present, and mold your future.

Crow looks with one eye and then the other to observe everything from all sides.

If Crow flies into your life, get out of your familiar nest, look beyond your present range of vision, listen to its caw and act accordingly.

Stay out of denial, stay in integrity, and speak your truth!

Hawk, Power Animal, Messenger, Discernment, Intuition, Observation, Wisdom, Courage, Truth

By Ina Woolcott

The hawk's gifts include clear sightedness, being observant, long distance memory, messages from the universe, guardianship, recalling past lives, courage, wisdom, illumination, seeing the bigger picture, creativity, truth, experience, wise use of opportunities, overcoming problems, magic, focus.

Hawk is associated with the number 14, with the tarot card Temperance. The Temperance card represents the teaching of higher expressions of psychic ability and vision.

The Hawk represents a messenger in the Native American culture. It often shows up in our life when we need to pay attention to the subtle messages found around us, and from those we come into contact with. As with all messages received, it is important to recognise the messages underlying truth. We will be taught to be observant and also pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we aren't using, a gift or unexpected help for which we haven't shown our gratitude for, or a message from the Universe. As there are so many hawk varieties, the messages vary and can affect all levels of our psyche.

Hawks are the protectors and visionaries of the Air. They hold the key to higher levels of consciousness. This power animal enables us to awakens vision and inspires a creative life purpose. Having Hawk as power animal means your life will be filled with responsibility, because Hawk people seek the overall view. You will most probably be aware of omens and spirit messages.

A Red tailed Hawk is special. It will ALWAYS be with you, for life. It has direct ties to the Kundalini, the seat of primal life force. It is linked to the base chakra. If you have this power animal, you need to be aware of and work toward fulfilling your soul's destiny. It reflects far greater intensity of energy within your life: physically, emotionally and mentally. Spiritual forces will be felt strong within you.

One trait all hawks share, is the ability to move between the seen and unseen realms gracefully, joining both worlds together. Their acute vision attributes this ability, their discriminating nature keeps them out of dangers path. Hawks have a broad vision, allowing them to see what the future holds. In man this is a symbol of prophetic insight. If this gift is underdeveloped, it is common for people with this power animal to have a tendency of over analysing everything. When this is so, clear vision is lost. You must learn to keep your analytical mind under control, not allowing it to run wild.

Hawk posses many hunting skills. The most common, when pursuing prey, is to swiftly follow the prey's efforts to get away. Once the prey is caught in the hawks mighty talons, it is then dismembered with their sharply pointed, powerful beak. For us, this may indicate that we may be able to run, but not hide from our destiny. For, eventually it will catch up with us.

The destiny of man is to awaken from their spiritual amnesia and to realign with the original intention of their soul. When the hawk gets a hold of us in his powerful talons, we will be asked to evaluate who we have become and to shatter our self created illusions. This will help our inner truth to come out into the open and for it to shine.

Hawk denotes union with All That Is. The hawk is a bird of the heavens, arranging the changes necessary to prompt our spiritual growth. Having this power animal can be bitter sweet. When accepting its presence in your life, you will be asked to surrender/give up anything that doesn't honour the integrity of all life. Whether its an idea, feeling or action. Although hard work is involved, the rewards to be reaped are great, far outweighing this.

Hawk Totem

Red Tailed Hawk Affirmation Card: I am healed and empowered through my visions. My life moves forward.

There are many types of Hawks found throughout the world and each has medicine specific to their individual types. Yet there also characteristics that are specific to all Hawks and those are the focus here.

Hawks are visionaries and messengers. As a totem they help to open the higher chakras so that we may hear and see the visions and messages that Spirit and the Universe are always sending our way. There is never a moment when the Universe is not trying to get a message through to us but we are so often too busy or unaware of what it is we need to be watching for! Hawk helps us to not only be aware that we are receiving a message but how to interpret them. The realm of symbols is also the realm of Hawk for Hawk is able to soar high above the earth to soar on the breath of Spirit, to commune with Spirit and thus understand through the intuitive level what the message means and with their keen eyesight, how to implement it once they return to earth through seeing the broader picture below.
Many of the messages Hawk may bring are about freeing yourself of thoughts and beliefs that are limiting your ability to soar above your life and gain a greater perspective. If one remains earthbound, then the possibilities of life are limited! It is this ability to soar high above to catch a glimpse of the bigger picture that is one of the aspects of Hawk medicine that makes it so valuable: If one is undergoing a difficult passage to know that just over the next hill is freedom and liberation if one keeps going can be a Godsend in supporting the person to keep moving forward! Likewise, if the path is not appropriate, Hawk Medicine can alert one to this and point out a far more favourable path.
Hawk medicine unites Heaven and Earth. Because of their ability to soar, they are able to reach up to the heavens to extract needed information and bring it back to earth. Much of this information is also very practical for use on a daily basis! It is not only higher concepts or ideas that are relayed, but also information we need to make our material or mundane lives more prosperous and fulfilling. For those who have difficulty attracting financial well being due to false or negative beliefs about money and success, Hawk can help to understand the true spiritual intent and purpose behind money and guide one in establishing new beliefs that are more joyful and abundant in nature.
Hawk can alert us to those times when we should NOT take action because we do not yet have all the information we need. For example, someone is thinking of about becoming involved in a relationship, personal or business, yet they get the feeling that something is "not quite right". This needs to be heeded and Hawk sent forth to gather the appropriate information to help the person make the best choice. Sometimes the person finds that Hawk was telling them to steer clear for very good reasons!
Hawk can also help balance those who are more attuned to the lunar sides of their nature and have trouble expressing the solar side in pursuit of their goals. It helps the person to activate the positive aspects of their sun sign and to balance it with the lunar needs.

Hawk people have their own unique challenges in life. Often they feel misunderstood in that when they attempt to deliver an important message others may shy away from it or respond with anger. Sometimes the messages may not be what the other person really wants to hear and yet the Hawk person feels duty bound to relay the message, no matter the consequences. It is important however that Hawk people do be aware of how they are presenting the messages they receive. They need more than many others to try and deliver the messages as gently as they can, only becoming more forceful if their inner guidance absolutely says it is needed. Sometimes simply thinking through for a time what needs to be said can help Hawk medicine people find just the right words to use that will make all the difference and in this they should be encouraged to take their time and soar above for a while before speaking their truth.
Hawk medicine people like many who carry strong predator totems may be shunned by others who sense and fear their inner power. Others may sense that this is a person who can see straight through them and as many folks think in terms of judging things as being good or bad, they are afraid that the Hawk person will see who they "really" are and so they strike first in an attempt to keep the Hawk person at bay. Hawk people need to learn how to veil their energy somewhat, not as an attempt to deceive others but to allow people to get to know them and understand that Hawk has no interest in judging others. Often these people have seen so much of the best and worst in life that they find they have no need to judge. All is part and parcel of Spirit's plan and if Spirit sees fit not to judge, why should the Hawk person?

Some Hawk people may have a tendency because of their vast ability to see clear through to the heart of things to become arrogant and this should be avoided because it keeps them earthbound as well as turning other people off! Often this starts as confusion on the part of the Hawk person who cannot understand why others seem unable to be as aware of the larger picture and their own issues and projections. Especially when the Hawk person also has Mercury in Aquarius or in Mercury in aspect to Uranus which further enhances their ability to see and know, they may fail to understand that others are not as well developed yet in these areas and blurt out what they see and know without thinking of how it may impact another person. If they can keep in mind that their talents and abilities are gifts they have been given and that others carry medicine that the Hawk person may be weak in expressing it helps them to stay focused on Spirit as the true messenger and that they are the Hollow Bones for the energy to flow through. No totem is better than another! Each is part of the larger tapestry and as such all are powerful and important.

Some with Hawk medicine find they have difficulty attracting the "right life Partner". Hawk people may find that they tend to attract more "earthy" types who find the Hawk person's need to "soar" disruptive or unimportant. This may occur because at a deeper level the Hawk person is fearful of soaring too high and crashing to earth Icarus like. In this instance, the Hawk person's real issue is one of learning how to trust themselves and their medicine. Hawk people can pair well with more earth centered people because the earthy person can encourage the Hawk person to stay on earth long enough to bring some of their visions and ideas to fruition before soaring off to the Heights again. It can be very easy for hawk people to want to stay high above the earth and never bring their wonderful ideas back to earth where they and others can put them practice.
Since Hawks mate for life, the Hawk Person may need to accept that it may take them some time before they find the person meant for them yet when they do, it is well worth the wait! Otherwise the Hawk person may find themselves tied to someone and unable to free themselves easily because of the deep entanglements they have created with this other person. Especially if children are involved in the relationship, the Hawk person may feel an extra strong sense of duty to stay in the relationship for the "sake of the children" as in many cases I have seen where the Hawk person ended up as the sole provider for the family . What the Hawk person needs is someone who can accept and honour their gifts and talents, giving them the space they need to soar high above.

In the Celtic tradition Hawk empowers a person to seek out their ancestral roots and to examine in depth that which is positive so that it may be integrated into the person's life and that which is limiting so it can be released. Tradition is only worth honoring when it supports joy and fulfillment in one's life! In this tradition Hawk also supports the solar side as stated above, helping a person to move forward in life and to seek out great quests to embark upon.

In the Egyptian Tradition Hawk was associated with Magic and shapeshifting. Isis is said to have shapeshifted into a Hawk to save Osiris. Horus also carried Hawk medicine which allowed him to see the "unseeable".

Among Native American traditions, Hawk served the role of Mercury, bringer of messages and portents of change. Hawk reminded the people they needed to be awake and aware.

One of the greatest gifts a Hawk medicine person can give the world is their visions of a better and brighter future. Visionaries are always ahead of their time and it's not easy seeing what others are not ready to see. Often these people are not honoured and recognized for their work and efforts until long after they have crossed over. And yet their work lives on to touch and enrich the lives of people the world over! Honour the Hawk people you meet in your life. Encourage them to soar so they may bring their visions and messages back to earth that all may benefit. If you are a Hawk person yourself, understand that Spirit can you an especial task to hold the energy of what could be, of potentials that are waiting to be envisioned and thus expressed through the mass consciousness. Seek out other Hawk people who can support you in your life and never allow others to cause you to lose sight of what is really important to you! Trust in the messages that Spirit entrusts to your special care and know that the expression of your visions will bring blessings not only to you, but also to all others!

Here is a brief expression of three specific Hawk medicines:

Red Tailed Hawk - An intensified Life force, often those who carry this Hawk medicine have Pluto and Mars strong in the horoscope. These folks are able to achieve great things through persistence and sheer strength of will. This Hawk can also help a person understand and overcome obstacles to prosperity and abundance.

Harris Hawk - represents cooperation and support from others. Libra or Venus may be strong in the horoscope or Venus in Aquarius or in the 11th house. A more Mercurial/Virgo aspect is also prominent with this medicine, also the North Node in Virgo or the 11th house. This Hawk helps one to spread the word about goals or projects to those people who can be helpful for you. For those who use music to help them soar high above, this is a wonderful totem to be working with as it helps to integrate music and sound as a healing modality.

Sparrowhawk - Awareness that opportunities that seem small on the surface have the potential for great growth and expansion over time. This Hawk helps us to see through to the heart of events and synchronicities that are trying to lead us to our greater goals and higher good. So often we ignore the smaller things in life because we can't see how they could possibly be of much use to us or help us to resolve a problem. Yet when we soar high above to see where they fit in the larger scheme of things, we see how they are a jumping off point that if it were not presented to us and pursued, we could not reach that we are truly seeking.

Latent Power

When observing the Red Tailed Hawk, the most distinguishing characteristics and attributes of these splendid birds of prey, are their eyesight, sharp talons that adorn their feet, and their vibrant red tail feathers. These are the very characteristics that reflect the Latent Power of this member of the Hawk family.

For purposes of examining the keyword of ~Latent Power,~ we begin with the Hawk`s sharp talons. In the wild, a Hawk`s talons are instruments of deadly precision. The talons will grasp their prey in a merciless grip while the beak rips and shreds in the quest for survival.

The second component to observe in the Red Tailed Hawk as it pertains to the key word of ~Latent Power,~ are the vibrant red tail feathers of the mature Hawk. These feathers are a Gift of maturation, and the power and energy that they represent for the two-legged with this raptor as a Primary Totem is very significant.

***For the two-legged beside whom Red Tail Hawk flies, a sharp mind will be evident, and these souls will possess the ability to perceive the subtlest of nuances that might escape other less "observant" individuals. Although this may be a tremendous Gift in assisting the Red Hawk Soul in the business world (and less ~intimate~ arenas of their daily Life), this same gift of communication and sharp intellect can also be used as a weapon, and words may become like the sharp beak and unrelenting talons of their Totem when these individuals are either attacked, or if they are operating from an unintegrated Personality Center.

There may be situations and circumstances when there is a need for the type of more ~direct~ speech that the Red Hawk Soul is capable of, and in those circumstances, the use of this inherent talent serves the individual well. Yet part of the evolutionary process for the Red Tailed Hawk individual, is in learning how to master this gift and wield its great power with conscious awareness, ever-mindful of its potential for either great insight, or great damage. When the Red Hawk Soul is then operating from such Higher Intent, these are the natural born investigators, psychics, attorneys and observers that deploy their acumen for insight and direct speech in a constructive, rather than destructive, manner.

Looking at the next component in understanding the Red Tailed Hawk`s Power, are the beautiful red tail feathers which distinguish this Hawk from other cousins. This Hawk does not receive his/her red feathers until a sufficient level of maturation has been achieved. When looking to the human beside whom Red Hawk flies, this is quite significant as well, for it indicates that the Red Feathers are not easily given, and must instead be "earned."

When witnessed in Nature, the color Red represents Power, Energy, and the Kundalini. The Kundalini is the Force that directs the flow of all other energy fields within the physical body. This Force lies dormant within each of us when we take up the ~Robe of Physical Life, and is thought to lie coiled at the ~base chakra~ (located near the base of the spine) and referred to as the ~Serpent Power.~ There the Power lies sleeping until it is awakened via the Soul who begins the journey on the road of spiritual discovery and who is consciously acknowledging and incorporating their Life Lessons.

Some envision the Kundalini as a powerful sexual energy, yet to view it thus is to limit the true breadth and power of this fundamental energy, for it is then keeping that energy coiled at the base chakra (sexual center), rather than encouraging it to reach further and higher.

At the time the energy is awoken, it begins to rise up through the other six energy centers (chakras). As it passes through each of these chakras, the lessons, issues and areas of our lives which are symbolized and or ~governed~ by these energy centers, are opened for our acknowledgment through the process of Conscious Awareness. Thus, when the Kundalini has completely uncoiled, its energy unfurled along the length of the spine and flowing easily through all seven energy points to emerge through the top (or ~Crown~) Chakra, a state of ~Enlightenment~ is experienced. (For an insightful & deeper look into the Chakras after finishing reading about the Red-Tailed Hawk Totem, I suggest visiting Mermaids Esoteric Site by clicking here)

This is a gradual process however, and should never be forced or pushed, for those who have attempted to do so, often experience either physical or mental/emotional collapse that can end one in a visit to the hospital or seriously ill. Hence, the symbolism of the Red Tail Feathers emerging only after sufficient maturation. For the two-legged with this Animal Totem, this indicates the need to approach spiritual awakening in a gradual, careful and conscious manner.

Yet once this fundamental energy unfurls as the Red Tail Feathers emerge, the beauty and depth of Spirit that shines brilliantly forth, will be both inspiration and guidance for Others who may be just beginning, or in the process of, their own awakening.***

Visionary

All Hawks are renowned for their visual acuity, with members of the Hawk and Owl family possessing the greatest vision of all raptors.

Red Tailed Hawks will utilize this powerful vision while soaring on the wind’s currents far above that they may have a broad field of vision with which to discover, then track, their intended prey.

***Red Tailed Hawk will soar beside the Two-Legged whose own gift of psychic vision may be exceptionally acute. This may take the form of precognitive dreams and/or ~visions~ during which these souls are quite literally able to "see the future."

If the gift of vision is not present from birth, then there will exist within the Red Hawk soul, the ability to pierce the veil that separates falsehood from truth. They will also possess an intensive gaze that can leave those who might find themselves the object of such a gaze, squirming under the penetrating stare.

Equally, Red Tailed Hawk individual, will have the ability to view the broad picture, in much the same fashion that a Hawk can gain a wide view of their surroundings while soaring on the unseen currents of wind as they ride the sky. The human counterpart will be a believer in the philosophy that all things happen for a reason, and it will be this awareness of the ~Big Picture,~ that will assist both themselves, and those whom they share their gift of keen insight with, through many a difficult time***

Guardianship

In the following quote, Chief Seattle eloquently expresses the concept of Guardianship. "What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.

You must teach the children that the ground beneath their feet is the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother.

Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the sons of the earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves. This we know, the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth.“ ~Chief Seattle~

***Part of the Role for the two-legged beside whom Red Tailed Hawk flies is that of Guardian of the Earth Mother. These are individuals who will possess an astute awareness of the concept of the interconnectedness of all things, and will have an inner reverence for all life.

These are the souls that are involved in making the world a better place, whether locally or globally. They will be protectors of the Earth Mother and tread softly upon her, encouraging and educating ~Others~ to do the same.

Often, they are either found initiating or actively involved in environmental causes, where their keen perception and insight will serve their chosen ~cause~ well. Yet it is their day to day existence and fundamental philosophy/foundation of action and belief, that distinguishes these individuals as true champions of Mother Earth as they seek to live in harmony with the ~Ina Maka~ and all that She births, provides, nurtures and sustains.

Totem Hawk Spirit Guide
Symbolism of the Hawk as Power Animal or Animal Familiar to Shamans

A Hawk Totem or Spirit Guide symbolizes foresight and perception to the shaman.

The hawk spirit guide is a messenger from the spirit world, blessed with deep connections with the sun and remarkable psychic perception. His acute powers of observation, along with his deep intuition make the totem hawk a powerful companion for the seeker on shamanic journeys.

Universal Hawk Shaman Symbolism
While different species of hawk each have their own unique shamanic symbolism, there are also universal characteristics common to all hawks as power animal:

-The totem hawk offers deep wisdom and knowledge thanks to his wide perspective on the world and its events. This also applies to his understanding of the spirit world, which makes his assistance invaluable to the shaman in unfamiliar realms.

-The hawk shaman benefits from the bird’s natural psychic sense, at times gaining the gift of second sight through him.

-The hawk spirit guide gives his shaman powers of natural and unforced leadership. People will naturally feel drawn to follow the hawk shaman’s guidance through trust and affection.

Symbolism of Hawk Species as Totem Animals

In addition to the universal characteristics of hawk spirit guides, each species brings its own special qualities to the shamans they guide in the spirit world:

-The diet of the sparrowhawk, sharp-shinned hawk and goshawk is mainly feathered, giving these birds an enhanced affinity with the air, symbolizing creativity, vision and focus. As power animals, these hawks gives great energy to new projects of ambitious scope.

-The noble peregrine falcon is renowned for his incredible speed and skill in flight; the peregrine falcon spirit guide bestows patience and precision.

-The kestrel is a bird that can gracefully hover and choose the right moment to act. The shaman with a kestrel animal familiar approaches all situations with great skill and judgment.

-The red-tailed hawk shaman is as great in spirit as the red tailed hawk is great in stature. The realization of noble visions and great deeds is to be expected when this beautiful hawk accompanies the shaman.

Shamans fortunate enough to be blessed with a hawk as power animal enjoy great perception, perspective on complex situations and powers of leadership. They quickly gain perspective and intuitive understanding on shamanic journeys. Often gifted spiritual leaders, the hawk shaman is a respected and important elder in his or her community, regardless of age.

Resurrection

The Scarab is a symbol of the sun and an emblem of Egyptian god Khepera,
the god of the Sun and immortality.
Their image was placed with the mummified remains of the dead
as a source of new life in the next world.
In the Middle Ages, alchemists drew the scarab in diagrams of the double spiral,

Elephant, Power Animal, Symbol of Commitment, Royalty, Strength

By Ina Woolcott

Elephant's medicine includes strength, royalty, connection to ancient wisdom, removal of obstacles and barriers, confidence, patience, using education opportunities, commitment, gentleness, communicating in relationships, discernment, intelligence, compassion. If this is your animal guide, these virtues are a part of your natural character. By applying them in your life soul evolution is accomplished.

Throughout history elephants have been revered. They are most intelligent creatures, and honoured by many cultures. As well as being the largest land animals, they are also among the longest lived, with life spans of 60+ years. In Buddhist tradition, the Buddha picked the form of a white elephant as one of his many incarnations, thus the rare appearance of a white elephant is still heralded as a manifestation of the gods. The Hindu god Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, has the head of an elephant.

Elephants can teach us that gentleness, commitment, and communication in relationships is very powerful and necessary to keep relationships alive, trusting and loving, whether it be friends, family or partner. Deeply committed to all creatures with whom they have relationships, elephants are tough when protecting others and gentle when nurturing them. The matriarch (the oldest, most experienced female leader of a herd) leads in a way that is both gentle and inclusive. Elephants are able to communicate telepathically. This can teach us how to truly listen to others.

Elephants are so similar, yet so different to our own species. We have so much to learn from them! Elephants have emotions that are comparable to human - love, joy, jealousy, rage.

Just like humans, young elephants are dependent on their mums, until they reach adulthood. The general lifespan of an elephant also closely parallels that of humans. When a baby is born, the entire community gathers around the mother and newborn and rumble with joy. This is equivalent to tears rolling down their faces. Just like human babies, elephants learn about getting along in the physical environment. For instance, elephant calves have to learn the many ways in which their trunks can be used. The newborn elephant is born into a community of love. Calves have more than one mother so to speak, as all are willing, eager teachers, from the matriarch, to her offspring and their young. They want to nurture, protect and help the youngest among them develop. They also teach first time mothers how to develop their own nurturing skills. Loyal and affectionate elephants would risk their lives for the sake of others in a family group. Wild elephants have been known to grieve and even shed tears when a family member has passed away. Elephants have amazing memories and when mistreated they often seek revenge.

Elephants show us that by supporting and loving one another, our own ability to thrive in the physical world is enhanced. We learn from them to pass on the gift of nurturing we received in our early years, be it from our biological family or others who helped us grow into who we are now. We must honour the elders of our community and nurture the young. Like the elephant, we need to help ease the transitions of those who are going into adulthood with gentle love, wisdom, patience and compassion. By having open hearts and minds, we can create strong relationships within the community, therefore building a strong community.

Elephants communicate telepathically with herd members as well as other elephants. As we choose to become closer and more open with those dear to us, our ability to understand them can deepen to a level that transcends speech.

Having an elephant totem gives you ancient wisdom and power to draw upon. They are the embodiment of strength and power. People with this power animal often have a very strong sex drive. Through using fragrances and incense, elephant can take you to new energies and power. Generally speaking elephant people are very affectionate toward family, caring for the young and the elderly. They also usually have an inborn knowledge about plants and roots. Elephants give us insights into the power of the three feminine energies - child, mother and old wise woman.

Although elephants weigh A LOT, they walk almost noiselessly, with exceptionally graceful and rhythmic striding. Their hearing, smell, touch and taste is very keen/sensitive. This makes up for their poor eyesight. In relation to their big heads, their eyes are very small and can only turn slightly from side to side. This results in restricted side vision. Those with this power animal feel things deeply and respond to those feelings from a place of inner knowing. Because their vision is limited they tend to look straight ahead and cant always see what going on around them. Learning to shift our focus to view the whole is helpful.

Elephants have just 4 teeth, all molars, 2 toward the front of the mouth and 2 toward the back. When the front ones wear down, they drop out and the 2 at the back come forward. Then 2 new molars grow in the back of the mouth to replace those that have moved forward. The back molars are able to be replaced 6 times throughout their life. When the last set wear out, they can no longer chew and die of starvation. Teeth are very symbolic, and are considered receivers and transmitters of energy linked by connecting paths throughout the astral body.

As the elephant is extremely intelligent, those with this power animal would make excellent researchers and alternative scientists.

Elephant tusks point backwards. They use them as weapons and for digging edible roots. From a spiritual point of view this hints at an ability to uncover the hidden memories and bring them to the fore for evaluation and healing. Let go.

THE SEVEN JEWELS OF ROYAL POWER

The Precious Elephant is a symbol of the strength of the mind in Buddhism. Exhibiting noble gentleness, the precious elephant serves as a symbol of the calm majesty possessed by one who is on the path. Specifically, it embodies the boundless powers of the Buddha which are miraculous aspiration, effort, intention, and analysis. The image at the right says it all: a stupa - symbolic of the mind of a Buddha with a basis of strong elephants.

Elephant:
Commitment

To read about the elephant is to have a glimpse into the life of an animal who is so curiously like and yet so unlike our own species.

The average period of dependency of a child upon its mother, the age of adulthood, and the general lifespan of an elephant closely parallel that of a humans. Elephants also have emotions comparable to humans: joy, rage, jealousy, love. For example, when a baby is born, the entire community crowds around the mother and newborn, rumbling with joy, the elephant equivalent of tears rolling down their faces.

Like human babies, elephants learn much more about getting along in the physical environment than they are born knowing. As a human child must learn to walk, the elephant calf must learn the many ways in which it can use its trunk.

The newborn elephant comes into a community of love. From the matriarch, the oldest and most experienced member of a herd, to her offspring and their young, an elephant calf, has not one but many mothers, each eager to teach and nurture the youngest among them. They also teach those who are mothers for the first time how to develop their own nurturing skills.

Elephants teach us that by supporting and loving each other, our own ability to flourish and prosper in the physical world is enhanced. From them, we learn to pass on the gift of nurturing we received in our early years -- whether it is to members of our own biological family or to the human community.

Part of this sharing comes through verbal or nonverbal communication. Elephants communicate telepathically, both with herd members and other elephants. So, as we choose to become closer and more open to those we love, our ability to understand them can deepen to a level that transcends speech.

We can learn to honor the elders of our community and nuture the young. Like the elephants, we help ease the transitions of those who are going into adulthood. By listening with open hearts, we can create strong relationships and community.

ELEPHANT MEDITATION

The massive elephant is the most earthy of animals and understands the manifestation process as does no other. Elephant’s capacity to manifest is connected to following the path of the heart, and elephants have huge hearts. This meditation journey with Elephant teaches us how to manifest what we want or need in the physical world.

Learn from Elephant how to get what you want and then look to see what lies beyond your expectations. With Elephant, you love and celebrate the earth on which you stand. As a way of thanks, of giving back, we can adopt an elephant for ourselves or as a holiday gift–as a personal way of contributing to safeguarding these giants of the jungle. Manifest your goals with this inspiring Elephant meditation:

It is best to have a specific purpose when you take this journey. Choose a goal or an obstacle to work with. Elephant can also help you manifest the things you need in your life. You can choose to focus on immediate or long-range plans.

This journey has two parts. The first part helps you see immediate steps you need to take, and the second helps you get a clear view of your ultimate goal.

Elephant Journey
It’s dark. First see an elephant’s eyes-big, intelligent, and willing to share your burden. As you look into the eyes of your elephant, tell him your problem or what you would like to accomplish. His form comes into view, and you become aware of the night sky, with a full moon and a blanket of stars, and then of the earth. The elephant drops slowly to one knee, and you climb onto his back.

The elephant begins to take you on a walk through nature. Ride the elephant through thickest of bushes, forests, or jungle, aware that no obstacles thwart your passage. You are following your heart’s desire and allowing your intellect to help you find the correct, balanced path. As you sway with the motion of the elephant, chest forward, you feel the elephant’s heart as your own, and your heart merges with his and naturally begins to open.

The terrain grows steeper, and the path more rigorous and narrow. Receive an intellectual awareness of what your problem or situation is and what you can do about it. By the time you’ve reached the top of the mountain, your heart is fully open. You’ve merged with, become one with, the elephant.

Your Journey
From your new vantage point on the peak of the mountain, feel the first ray of sunlight appear and strike your third eye. Allow yourself to experience the full impact and intensity of the sunlight as it penetrates your third eye during the time it takes for the sun to rise.

As the horizon opens out before you, take five deep breaths. Throw your head and trunk back with each inhale through your nose, and blow out the breath from your mouth as you bring your head forward. At the end of the fifth breath, lie on your back. With your final exhale, begin to float and allow whatever will to happen. Allow your vision to carry you into the future. The elephant has cleared your path and shown you the way. Explore. Look beyond your expectations. Stay as long as you are comfortable.

To come back, think of the elephant’s eyes.

The Elephant Totem

The Elephant Totem indicates strength, luck and wisdom. The Elephant was the Totem animal of the God Shiva, the Destroyer, who seeks to banish illusion and encourage clearer perception. Shiva and his Goddess wife, Radha produced, as one of their offspring, the Elephant headed God Ganesha. Ganesha was Lord of Ilosts and who impregnated the virgin Maya who in turn bought Buddha into flesh. The White elephant is considered sacred in India and too priceless to be used for work or for warfare. Buddhists believe that Buddha shows himself as the form of the White elephant as one of his manifestations. The rare appearance of a White Elephant is still heralded as a manifestation of the Gods. The Chinese see the Elephant as the embodiment of sexual prowess, royalty, strength of purpose and discretion.

Elephants are the largest land animals; they are very intelligent and have excellent memories. They are also one of the longest lived in the animal kingdom. They are very quiet for their large size, have excellent senses of smell, touch, taste and hearing. These are very loyal and affectionate animals and will risk their own lives for their families. They have been witnessed shedding tears for the loss of a family member.

Elephants have very powerful legs and trunks; their trunks are excellent tools for their survival and contain hundreds of muscles within. If an elephant baby cries the herd will group around it touching it with their trunks to sooth and comfort the upset offspring. They are loving parents and do not shun or ignore the elderly of their herds, in fact they go out of their way to protect both the oldest and youngest of their herds, honoring and respecting the wisdom of age and the hope of youth.

To watch an Elephant in the wild is to truly experience its grace and magnetism. Their majestic presence is a wonder to behold. The Elephant possesses many virtues that are powerful and valuable and which any person would be wise to emulate or divine. One who has the power of the Elephant will see enhanced insight and intuition; a better sense of family values allowing one the ability to tap the resources of the strength of a tight knit family unit. Wisdom, longevity, devotion to family, nobility and grace are all part of this amazing animals totems.

The Superlative Elephant Totem possesses the following virtues:

Elephant Animal Pearls are said to impart their particular magical virtues to their owner. Elephant Pearls are characteristic of its host; they possess all the remarkable characteristics that may be seen in the Elephant itself; the dignity and grace of this animal is contained within the pearl waiting for its proper owner to bestow its inner magic to that unique and fortunate individual.
For century’s shamans, priestesses, spiritualists and practitioners of the occult have used Elephant animal pearls to transfer the powerful magical energy of the Elephant to themselves and to others in need of this commanding animal magic.

IF ROOSTER IS YOUR POWER ANIMAL

Leopardo - Leopard

lEOPARDO - LEOPARD

The Leopard is highly regarded by many cultures and tribes. In ancient and modern Egypt the Leopard is seen as a sign of divinity. If a Leopard crossed ones path in ancient Egypt, that person was thought to possess the highest of spiritual and holy qualities and their advice was sought by spiritual and political leaders. The Chinese have long regarded the Leopard as a great and mighty warrior. In Africa the natives believe that they are animal guides for the spirits of the dead, and help them to find their final resting place.

Leopards have impressively strong bodies and necks. They often carry their prey, which are usually very heavy, up into trees so that their food is hidden from scavengers. They are solitary animals and have a defined territory that they fiercely defend from intruders. They hunt at dusk and dawn; they are silent, and stealthy stalkers, and are very fast and agile. Leopards will drink every day, if possible, but can go a month without water without suffering any ill effects. They have excellent homing instincts and can find their territory even if they are taken far away from it.

Another unique characteristic of this animal is their keen sense of sight and hearing. The Leopard possesses vision that is six times that of humans and their hearing is two times that of humans. Their eyesight is among the keenest of all animals on land and is what enables them to hunt at dusk and dawn when the light is not its brightest. This characteristic greatly contributes to the idea that they are indeed imbued with the ability to see what others cannot.

Leopards are beautiful and incredibly strong animals and there are several variations on their coat coloring, depending on the region they live in. The most popular coloring is a light golden shade with deep brown, spots. Leopards that live in the deep rain forests are darker and at times are black with dark rosettes; these Leopards were once thought to be a different species and they were called Black Panthers, however, they are truly Leopards and their spots, or rosettes, can be seen up close at the right angle. Leopards that live in the high mountains are white with black spots and are beautiful and unique to behold. A Leopards coloring helps it to camouflage itself from predators and prey. This characteristic lends itself to their virtue of shape shifting and the ability to fool those who seek to harm them.

The Leopard possesses many animal virtues that are powerful and valuable and which any person would be wise to emulate or divine. One who has the power of the Leopard will see enhanced personal power and self-confidence, gracefulness and stealth are also all part of this noble totem’s magic. Leopards are reserved and dignified animals and do not represent flashiness or flamboyance.

The impressive Leopard Totem possesses the following virtues:
Independence, sense of freedom, steadfastness, psychic-sight, fearlessness, bravery in the darkness, ability to solve problems, leadership without ego, cunning, survival skills, greater spiritual vision, acute senses, clairvoyance, intelligence, prophecy, shape shifting, integrity, and dignity.

Leopard Animal Pearls are said to impart their particular magical virtues to their owner. Leopard Pearls are characteristic of its host animal; they possess all the splendid characteristics that may be seen in the Leopard itself; the dignity and grace of this animal is contained within the pearl waiting for its proper owner to bestow its inner magic to that unique and fortunate individual. For century’s shamans, priestesses, spiritualists and practitioners of the occult have used Leopard animal pearls to transfer the powerful magical energy of the Leopard to themselves and to others in need of this commanding animal magic. Leopard pearls are highly sought after by any wishing to absorb Leopard virtues into their lives and develop stronger mental abilities such as those embodied by this powerful creature. The owner of a Leopard pearl will see their lives, spiritual energy and mental clarity imbued with all of the virtues attributed to the visionary of the animal kingdom, the Leopard. The Leopard animal totem is a strong spirit indeed and its magical properties are one of the most influential of all animal totems. Independence, a sense of freedom, the ability to solve problems, and so much more can be integrated into the spirit of the possessor of this magical pearl and the Leopard totem.
